[Source] It is the flower of Hibiscus mutabilis , a plant of the Malvaceae family. Pick the first blooming flowers in October and dry them in the sun.

[Original form] Hibiscus mutabilis (Collected Works of Liu Hedong) is also known as: Magnolia (Collected Works of Jiang Liling), hibiscus tree, hibiscus bark tree (Compendium of Materia Medica), drunken hibiscus (Essentials of Shengcao Xingbei), and large-leaf hibiscus.

【Habitat distribution】Mostly cultivated in gardens. Distributed in most parts of the country. It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Jiangsu and other places.

[Properties] The dried flowers are bell-shaped, or shrunk into an irregular oval; there are 8 to 10 linear bracts; the calyx is gray-green, 5-lobed, and covered with star-shaped hairs on the surface; the corolla is light pink, reddish brown to brown, wrinkled, soft, and has a yellow-brown stamen in the center.

[Meridian] ① "Southern Yunnan Materia Medica"): "Enters the lungs."

[Functions and indications] Clearing away heat, cooling blood, reducing swelling, detoxifying, treating carbuncle, furuncle, burns, cough due to lung heat, vomiting blood, metrorrhagia, and leucorrhea.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 2-4 qian (1-2 liang for fresh ones). For external use: grind into powder and apply on skin.

[Additional prescription] ① For treating vomiting blood, uterine bleeding, conjunctivitis, sores, and lung abscess: decocted 3 qian to 1 liang of hibiscus flowers. (Common Chinese Herbal Medicines in Shanghai)

[Clinical application] A 20% ointment made from hibiscus flowers can be applied externally to treat carbuncle, cellulitis, etc. It has anti-inflammatory, swelling-delaying, pus-dispelling and analgesic effects. According to the observation of more than 300 cases, the pain is generally relieved after applying the medicine once; after 3 to 7 times, the effect of draining pus if there is pus and reducing swelling if there is no pus can be achieved.
