What is the use of the traditional Chinese medicine prescription Bupleurum?

Bupleurum is a very good traditional Chinese medicine. Chaihu can treat colds, so friends who have colds may want to try it. Bupleurum generally has no side effects, so some friends don’t need to worry. Bupleurum can also treat irregular menstruation and relieve dysmenorrhea. Female friends who often suffer from dysmenorrhea may wish to try it. In addition, Bupleurum has a great effect on reducing fever. Below is some information about Bupleurum that the editor has collected. Let’s take a look.

Xiao Chaihu Decoction

【Prescription】 Bupleurum (3 qian), Ginseng (2 qian), Scutellaria (2 qian), Pinellia (1.5 qian), Licorice (1 qian)

【Functions and indications】 Treat typhoid fever, chills and fever like malaria, chest pain, difficulty urinating, and astringent stool.

[Usage and Dosage] Take the above ingredients for one dose, add two cups of water, three slices of ginger, and two red dates, boil for one hour, and take at any time.

Chaihu Method Instructions

1. The dosage of antipyretic herbs should be large, while the dosage of yang-raising herbs should be small; herbs that soothe the liver and relieve depression should be stir-fried with vinegar, while herbs that cause yin deficiency and bone steaming should be stir-fried with turtle blood.

2. The dried rhizome of large-leaf Bupleurum has densely covered rings on the surface and is poisonous, so it cannot be used as Bupleurum.

3. Bupleurum is often used together with Pueraria lobata and Notopterygium wilfordii to treat colds.

4. Bupleurum has a better antipyretic effect. When the evil is in the Shaoyang meridians and there is alternation of cold and heat, it is often used together with Scutellaria baicalensis and Pinellia ternata (such as Xiao Chaihu Decoction).

5. For malaria, Bupleurum can be used in combination with Amomum villosum, Citrus aurantium, etc.

6. For irregular menstruation or dysmenorrhea caused by liver qi stagnation, it can be used together with Chinese angelica, white peony root, cyperus rotundus, curcuma and other drugs.

7. Antipyretic. Active ingredients: volatile oil (eugenol, caproic acid, r-undecanoic acid lactone and p-methoxybenzone), bupleurosaponin (sapogenin A). Effect: It has a significant antipyretic effect on fever caused by typhoid, paratyphoid vaccine, E. coli liquid, fermented milk, yeast, etc.; and can lower the normal body temperature of animals. The commercial Bupleurum decoction 2g/kg was administered intragastrically to rabbits, which had a significant antipyretic effect on fever caused by vaccines and warm acupuncture.

I believe that through the above information, everyone must have some understanding of Chaihu. Bupleurum tastes a bit bitter, but it is very useful for us. When taking Bupleurum, you must be careful not to eat spicy and greasy foods, and you cannot take other medicines while taking Bupleurum. Friends with high blood pressure and heart disease should take the medicine under the guidance of a doctor.
