【Other name】 Guangdougen

[Source] This product is the dried roots and rhizomes of Sophora tonkinensis Gapnep., a plant of the Leguminosae family . Dig up in autumn, remove impurities, wash and dry.

[Properties] The rhizome of this product is irregularly nodular, with the stem base often remaining at the top and several roots underneath. The roots are oblong, often branched, of varying lengths, and 0.7 to 1.5 cm in diameter. The surface is brown to tan, with irregular longitudinal wrinkles and raised transverse lenticels. It is hard and difficult to break, with light brown bark and light yellow wood. It has a bean smell and tastes extremely bitter.

【Identification】 (1) Cross section of this product: The cork layer consists of several to dozens of rows of cells. The 1 to 2 rows of cells on the outer side of the cortex contain prismatic calcium oxalate crystals, which intermittently form rings of crystal-containing cells. The walls of the crystal-containing cells are lignified and thickened. There are scattered fiber bundles in both the cortex and phloem. The cambium is ring-shaped. The xylem is well developed, with rays 1 to 8 rows of cells wide; the vessels are round, mostly scattered singly, or gathered in 2 or more groups, some containing yellow-brown substances; the wood fibers are scattered in bundles. The thin-walled cells contain starch granules, and a few contain prismatic crystals.

[Processing] Remove residual stems and impurities, soak, wash, moisten thoroughly, cut into thick slices, and dry in the sun.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, cold; poisonous.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat, detoxifies, reduces swelling and relieves sore throat. Used for fire toxicity accumulation, sore throat, and sore gums.

【Usage and Dosage】 3 to 6 g.

【Storage】 Store in a dry place.

[Remarks] For the treatment of sore throat caused by heat toxicity, it is often used together with Belamcanda chinensis, Lonicera japonica, Forsythia suspensa, Isatis root, etc. In addition, this product can also be used for lung heat cough and jaundice.
