Sconialis [Picture] can not only supplement the body's nutritional elements, but also help regulate the body's various functions. It also has high medicinal value. Today, I will take you to learn about Sconialis [Picture].

[Other names] Tanggut Scopolamine, Tibetan eggplant, camphor willow monster, Tangchuan Nabao

[Source] It is a plant of the genus Scopolia in the Solanaceae family, Scopolia tangutica Maxim. [Anisodus tanguticus (maxim.) Pasch.], and its root is used as medicine. Collect in autumn and winter, wash, peel, slice and dry for later use.

[Original form] Perennial herb, up to 1 meter tall. The roots are enlarged, oblong-conical, and yellowish brown. Stems erect, mostly tufted, slightly hairy or glabrous. Simple leaves are alternate; petioles are thick; leaf blades are oblong ovate to narrow elliptic, 8-21 cm long, 4-13 cm wide, entire, with wavy or sparse shallow teeth. It blooms in summer, with solitary flowers in leaf axils, and pedicels that are thick and slightly curved at the tip; the calyx is broadly bell-shaped, about 3.5 cm in diameter, with 5 slightly irregular shallow lobes at the tip, and a distinct venation network; the corolla is bell-shaped, slightly the same length as the calyx, purple-red-brown, with 5 shallow round lobes at the tip; there are 5 stamens, attached to the base of the corolla tube, slightly covered with long soft hairs; the ovary is superior, nearly spherical, the style is enlarged, and the stigma is large and round-headed. The capsule is surrounded by an enlarged persistent calyx with a thick, woody pedicel up to 2 mm in diameter. The persistent calyx is oblong bell-shaped, about 7 cm long and 5 cm in diameter, with 5 shallow lobes at the tip. The calyx ridges are thick and raised, with obvious venation, and the lid is cracked, with 1 chamber in the lid and 2 chambers in the lower part. Seeds are numerous, brown, oblate.

[Habitat distribution] It grows in sparse forests and grasses on high mountains, and is distributed in Gansu, Qinghai and other provinces.

[Cultivation] It likes a cool environment, is resistant to severe cold, and avoids waterlogging. It is suitable to be planted in fertile land with good drainage. For seed propagation, dig furrows and sow in rows with a row spacing of 1.5 feet before the winter freeze or after the spring thaw, cover with soil about 1 inch, and use 2 to 3 feet of seeds per mu. After germination, thin out the seedlings when they are 2 to 3 inches tall, with a spacing of 1 foot between plants. Pay attention to loosening the soil and weeding during the growing period, and pay attention to drainage during the rainy season. If aphids and red spiders are found, spray them with 1605, 666 or dimethoate emulsion.

[Chemical composition] The root and the whole herb contain a variety of tropine alkaloids; scopolamine, hyoscyamine, anisodine [6(s)hydro-xyhyoscyamine] and hyoscyamine, etc.

[Pharmacological action] 1. Scopolamine has an inhibitory effect on the conditioned reflex of rats. It also has the effect of counteracting the whole-body tremors in mice caused by the injection of tremorine; larger doses of scopolamine have a significant effect on the EEG activity of unanesthetized cats, with the EEG showing persistent high-amplitude slow waves, disappearance of hippocampal gyri, and no EEG startle response. Generally, there is no obvious effect on animal behavior. Some animals are quieter or even sleepy than before administration.

[Toxicity] Symptoms of scopolamine poisoning include thirst, burning throat, difficulty swallowing, hot and dry skin and flushing, dilated pupils, blurred vision, excitement, irritability, talking nonsense, rapid pulse, and even convulsions, paralysis of the respiratory center and death. Rescue methods: gastric lavage (use 3.6g of potassium permanganate dissolved in 9 liters of water, or use 0.5% tannic acid solution), or give emetics (in the early stage of poisoning, before the patient has vomited out all the poison); catharsis; take egg white and activated carbon; drink large amounts of sugar water or drip glucose solution through the meridians; subcutaneously inject 0.01g of pilocarpine once every half an hour until the mouth becomes moist. Symptomatic treatment: Sedatives (such as chloral hydrate, barbiturates, diphenylamine) can be used for restlessness or convulsions; respiratory stimulants can be used if the respiratory center is depressed and the patient is kept warm; give oxygen or artificial respiration when necessary.
