[Source] It is a plant of the genus Desmodium in the leguminous family, Desmodium heterocarpum (L.) DC., and the whole plant is used as medicine. Harvest in summer and autumn, wash and dry.

[Original form] Semi-shrub or small shrub, 1 to 3 meters high, with young branches sparsely covered with white long hairs. Stem erect or slightly curved, sometimes nearly procumbent. The trifoliate leaves are alternate, with a larger one at the top; the petiole is about 2 cm long and covered with soft hairs; the stipules are linear-lanceolate and the stipules are needle-shaped; the leaflets are obovate-rectangular or elliptical, 1.5~6 cm long and 1.3~2.5 cm wide, with rounded apex, cuneate base, entire margin, glabrous above and covered with long white hairs beneath. In summer, the inflorescence is terminal or lateral, with dense twin flowers and pedicels about 3 mm long; the calyx is broadly bell-shaped, with broad lanceolate calyx teeth, shorter than or equal to the calyx tube; the papilionate corolla is purple-red, about 5 mm long. The pods are linear, 1.2-2.5 cm long and about 3 mm wide, with a curved column base at the tip, covered with hooked hairs, and 4-7 nearly square pods with shallow wavy internodes. Seeds round and kidney-shaped.

[Habitat distribution] Growing in grass on hillsides. Distributed in provinces and regions such as Zhejiang, Fujian, Taiwan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan.

【Nature and flavor】Bitter, sweet and cold.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat, detoxifies, reduces swelling and relieves pain. Prevent mumps, epidemic encephalitis B, and sore throat; use externally to treat snake bites, swelling and pain from falls, and carbuncle.

[Usage and Dosage] The dosage is 0.5~2 liang; for external use, mash the fresh product and apply it to the affected area.

[Additional prescription] For poisonous snake bites : (1) Take equal amounts of peanut and iron broom (iron broom with cut leaves), dry them in the sun, grind them into powder, add a small amount of starch and press them into tablets, each containing 0.3 g of the raw drug. Take with warm water or grind and mix with warm water, 15 to 20 tablets each time, 2 to 3 times a day.
