[Source] It is the root of the Ranunculaceae plant Thalictrum lucidum . Harvest in summer and autumn, wash and dry.

[Original morphology] Perennial herb, glabrous. The stem is erect, red, and 65 to 150 cm high. Leaves are alternate, 2-3 times 3-compound, with short petioles, sheath-like base, and up to 35 cm long; leaflets are ovate, 1.6-5.5) cm long, 1-4 cm wide, 3-lobed, with lobes entire or sparsely serrated, covered with white powder on the underside, and with raised veins. Inflorescence is panicle, 10-35 cm long; flowers are small, about 7 mm in diameter, and yellow-green in color; there are 4 sepals, which are green-white, narrowly ovate, 3-4 mm long; there are no petals; there are many stamens, about 7 mm long; there are 2-4 carpels, and the stigma is arrow-shaped. Achenes are ovoid, 2-3 mm long, with distinct longitudinal ribs.

[Habitat distribution] Grown on the edges of hilly or mountainous forests and valleys. Distributed in Guizhou, Hubei, Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, North China, Northeast China and other places.

[Chemical composition] The roots contain 0.08% thalictine, thalidomide, thalidomide-1, and thalidomide-2. The stems and leaves contain 0.004% thalassemic acid, thalassemic acid alkaloids and thalassemic acid methyl ether. The leaves also contain the flavonoid glycoside thalidomide.

[Pharmacological action] For the effects of the alkaloids contained in this product, please refer to the entries for "Thalidomide" and "Atractylodes macrocephala".

[Properties and flavors] "Shaanxi Chinese Herbal Medicine": "bitter, cold, slightly toxic."

【Function】 "Shaanxi Chinese Herbal Medicine": "clears away heat and detoxifies. Treats toothache, acute dermatitis, and eczema."

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 2 to 3 qian. For external use: grind into powder and sprinkle.
