[Source] This product is the dried root tuber of Asparagus cochinchinensis (Lour.) Merr., a plant of the Liliaceae family . Dig up in autumn and winter, wash, remove the stem base and fibrous roots, boil or steam in boiling water until cooked through, remove the skin while hot, wash and dry.

[Properties] This product is long and spindle-shaped, slightly curved, 5 to 18 cm long and 0.5 to 2 cm in diameter. The surface is yellowish white to light yellowish brown, translucent, smooth or with longitudinal wrinkles of varying depths, occasionally with remnants of gray-brown skin. The texture is hard or soft, sticky, the cross section is horny, and the central column is yellowish white. It has a slight odor and tastes sweet and slightly bitter.

[Identification] Cross section of this product: the root cover sometimes remains. The cortex is broad, with stone cells on the outside. The stone cells are light yellow-brown, long, oblong or quasi-circular, with a diameter of 32-110 μm, thick walls, and extremely fine and dense pits and grooves, some of which are arranged in rings intermittently; mucous cells are scattered, and bundles of calcium oxalate raphes exist in oval mucous cells, with raphes 40-99 μm long. The endothelium is prominent. There are 31 to 135 phloem bundles and xylem bundles in the pericycle, which are arranged at intervals. A few vessels penetrate deep into the pith, and the pith cells also contain bundles of calcium oxalate needle crystals.
