[Original form] Litsea cubeba, a deciduous tree, up to 20m tall. Leaves are alternate, broadly obovate, rhombic-obovate or broadly elliptic, 9-20cm long, 6-13cm wide, obtuse or rounded at the apex, slightly ear-shaped at the base, entire, thick papery, with reddish-brown veins, 7-9 pairs of lateral veins, with short soft hairs on both sides, gradually becoming smooth on the upper side when old; petiole 3-7cm long. The flowers are unisexual, dioecious, opening before the leaves, in umbels of 5-8 flowers; the involucre has 8 segments, broadly ovate, with silky hairs on the outside; the perianth is yellow, 6-8 lobed, the lobes are of varying sizes, and hairy on the outside; the male flowers have 9 fertile stamens, 4 anthers, and inward-lobed petals; the female flowers have 9 reduced stamens, ovate ovary, and slightly short soft hairs near the top of the style. The drupe is oval, black when ripe, and about 1.5 cm long. Flowering period is March-April. Fruiting period is September-October.
