[Other names] Sea walnut (Guihai Yuhengzhi), black tung oil (Guangxi Medicinal Plant List).

[Source] It is the seeds of Castanea japonica, a plant of the Macrothornaceae family. Harvest when ripe in autumn, remove the seeds and dry them.

[Original form] Stone chestnut (Description of Southern Plants), also known as: candle fruit tree.

[Habitat distribution] Distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Yunnan and other places. Produced in Guangdong, Guangxi and other places.

[Properties] Dry seeds have a hard shell on the outside, are irregularly oblate, about 2 to 3 cm in diameter, with a slightly pointed apex and a yellow-white film on the outside. After removing the film, the yellow-green or brownish-brown woody hard seed coat is revealed. The surface is uneven with shallow longitudinal grooves, a distinct hilum on the ventral side, and a distinct or blurred seed ridge. The seed coat is about 2 mm thick and contains a white kernel that is extremely oily and tastes sweet and greasy. Big and full ones are better.

[Chemical composition] The shell accounts for 68% of the total weight of the seed, containing 7.9-9.8% water, 1.7-2.2% crude protein, and 4.0-7.7% ash. The kernel accounts for 32% of the total seed weight and contains 54.77% oil (palmitic acid 8.17, stearic acid 3.38, oleic acid 39.52, linolenic acid 38.29, glycerol 8.68, unsaponifiable matter 0.96%). The residue after degreasing contained 45.15% protein, 31.47% sugar and 7.05% glutamic acid.

[Pharmacological action] The pungent resin in the seed oil has a laxative effect.
