[Source] Medicinal material source: the stem bark or root bark of the plant Acanthopanax elegans of the Araliaceae family.

[Original form] Shrub, 2-4m high, sometimes creeping. The branches are glabrous, with one to several thorns or no thorns on the nodes, and many barbs scattered between the nodes; the thorns are slender, not swollen at the base, and point downward. The leaves have 5 leaflets, rarely 3-4; or the petiole is 5-10cm or cm long, 2.5-5cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, rarely tail-pointed, cuneate at the base, glabrous on both sides, with sharply serrated edges, and 6-10 pairs of lateral veins; the petiolules are 3-15mm long. The umbel is single and terminal, or several of them form a short panicle, with a diameter of 2-4cm and many flowers; the peduncle is 2-8cm long; the pedicel is 1-2cm long; the flowers are yellow-green; the calyx is glabrous, with 5 small teeth on the edge; the petals are 5, long ovate, recurved when flowering, and there are 5 stamens; the ovary has 5 chambers, and the styles are all fused into a column. The fruit is ovoid with 5 ribs; the style is persistent. The flowering period is from June to August, and the fruiting period is from August to October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in jungles at an altitude of 1000-3200m.

【Nature and flavor】 Spicy; slightly bitter; warm

【Functions and indications】Relieve rheumatism; dredge meridians; strengthen iliac bone. It is used to treat rheumatic pain, cramps, numbness, soreness of waist and knees, hemiplegia, trauma, edema, warm and itchy skin, and scrotal swelling.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 9-15g; or soaked in wine. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash it for application; or decoct it in water for washing.

[Note] People with Yin deficiency and excess fire should take this medicine with caution.
