[Other names] Dioscorea bulbifera, buckwheat buns, cinnabar lotus [Northwest], red medicine [Beijing], realgar root [Hubei, Hunan], monkey blood seven, blood Panax notoginseng [Shaanxi]

[Source] It is a plant of the genus Polygonum, Polygonum cillinerve (Nakai) Ohwi [P. multiflorum Thunb. var. cillinerve (Nakai) Steward] of the Polygonaceae family, and its tubers are used as medicine. Dig up in spring and autumn, remove the fibrous roots, wash, slice and dry for later use. Or roast it with honey or stir-fry it with vinegar.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, slightly astringent, cool. Slightly poisonous.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies, relieves pain, stops bleeding, and regulates menstruation. Used for tonsillitis, gastritis, enteritis, dysentery, urinary tract infection, hematemesis, epistaxis, bloody stool, functional uterine bleeding, irregular menstruation; used externally to treat bruises and traumatic bleeding.

[Usage and Dosage] 1-3 qian, decocted in water or soaked in wine, can also be ground into powder and taken with water; for external use, grind into powder or prepare into 20-30% ointment and 1% solution.

【Note】 Pregnant women should take with caution.

[Remarks] (1) A small number of patients experience abdominal distension, nausea, vomiting, numbness of hands, etc. after taking the medicine. Excessive dosage may also cause dizziness. For mild cases, there is no need to stop the medication, it will disappear on its own and no special treatment is required.
