[Other names] Radix Pseudostellariae (Southern Yunnan Materia Medica), Rhizoma Cibotii (Classification of Herbal Properties), Coal Seed, Coal Fruit (Guiyang Folk Medicinal Herbs), Fragrant Osmanthus (Guangxi Plant List), Osmanthus fragrans, Bath Leaf, Fragrant Grass, Fragrant Sky (Yunnan Chinese Herbal Medicine), Small Bone Herb, Rhizoma Cibotii (Kunming Folk Commonly Used Herbs).

[Source] The stems and leaves of Gaultheria yunnanensis, a plant of the Ericaceae family . Harvested in summer and sun-dried.

[Original form] Yunnan white pearl tree, also known as: Yunnan white pearl tree.

[Habitat distribution] Growing on mountain grass slopes and jungle edges. Distributed in Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangxi and other places. Produced in Yunnan and Guizhou.

[Properties] The stem is about 35 cm long, much branched, 3 to 5 mm in diameter, yellow-brown in surface, with longitudinal stripes and petiole remnants. Most leaves fall off. It has a faint odor and a slightly bitter taste. It is best to use it fresh, dry, or with green leaves.

[Chemical composition] The leaves contain 0.5-0.8% volatile oil. The main ingredient is methyl salicylate.

[Pharmacological action] Oral administration of methyl salicylate has antipyretic, analgesic and anti-rheumatic effects, which are similar to salicylic acid drugs and require the same dosage. However, due to the slow and irregular absorption of this product, the effect occurs later after administration. This product is very irritating and can be diluted with 1 to 2 parts of olive oil and used externally as an anti-irritant. This product can also produce specific salicylic acid poisoning symptoms, and the poisoning dose is about 2/3 of sodium salicylate.

【Nature and flavor】 Spicy, warm.

【Functions and indications】 Dispel wind and dampness, promote blood circulation and dredge meridians. Treat rheumatic joint pain, water spills, bruises, toothache, and eczema.

[Usage and Dosage] For internal use: decocted in water, 3 to 5 qian (1 liang for fresh); or soaked in wine. For external use: decoct in water and wash.

[Additional prescription] ① Treat rheumatic joint pain: one liang of Touguxiang. Take it in decoction. (Guizhou Herbal Medicine)
