【Other Names】 Tooth soap, small tooth soap, eyebrow soap

[Source] Deformed small pods produced by Gleditsia sinensis Lam., a plant of the genus Gleditsia in the Leguminosae family, due to trauma and other factors. Harvest in autumn, remove impurities and dry in the sun.

[Properties] This product is cylindrical, slightly flat and curved, 5 to 11 cm long and 0.7 to 1.5 cm wide. The surface is purple-brown or purple-brown, covered with gray-white waxy powder, which becomes shiny after being wiped off. It also has tiny wart-like protrusions and linear or reticular cracks. There are bird-beak-shaped style remains at the top and fruit stalk remains at the base. It is hard and brittle, easily broken, with a brown-yellow cross section, loose in the middle, with light green or light brown-yellow filaments, and occasionally with underdeveloped seeds. It has a slight, irritating smell, and tastes sweet first and then spicy.

【Identification】 (1) The powder of this product is brown-yellow. There are numerous stone cells, which are round, oblong or irregular in shape, with a diameter of 15 to 53 μm. The fibers are mostly in bundles, with a diameter of 10 to 25 μm, slightly lignified walls, and surrounding cells containing prismatic calcium oxalate crystals and a few clusters of crystals, forming crystal fibers; square-like thick-walled cells are often present next to the fiber bundles. The length of calcium oxalate prismatic crystals is 6 to 15 μm; the diameter of cluster crystals is 6 to 14 μm. There are many lignified parenchyma cells with obvious pits and grooves. The epidermal cells of the pericarp are reddish brown, polygonal in appearance, with thick walls and granular keratin texture visible on the surface.

[Nature and flavor] Spicy, salty, warm; slightly toxic.

【Functions and indications】Expel phlegm, open the orifices, disperse lumps and reduce swelling. It is used for lockjaw caused by stroke, coma, epilepsy with excessive sputum, obstruction of the joints, throat congestion and phlegm, cough with stubborn phlegm, difficulty in expectorating sputum, and dry and hard stool; it can also be used externally to treat carbuncles.

[Usage and Dosage] 1-1.5g, mostly used in pills or powders. For external use, grind into powder and blow into nose to induce sneezing or grind into powder and apply to affected area.

【Note】 It is forbidden for pregnant women and patients with hemoptysis or hematemesis.

【Storage】 Store in a dry place to prevent moth damage.

[Remarks] (1) This medicine is extremely sharp and is not suitable for treating phlegm accumulation. It should not be used by the weak, pregnant women, or those prone to hemoptysis.
