[Original morphology] Viola julibrissin is a perennial herb, 15-20cm tall, glabrous. The taproot is long and straight. Stem erect, branched from below. Leaves are alternate; petiole is 3-5cm long; leaf blade is narrowly ovate in outline, 5-12cm long, 4-6cm wide, two to three times pinnately divided, one time with 5-7 lobes, the last lobe is lanceolate to linear, slightly powdery on the underside. The raceme is terminal, 3-8cm long, with 8-18 densely packed flowers; the bracts are lanceolate, 5-8mm long; the sepals are membranous, ovate, about 5mm long, with a notch at the tip; the corolla is yellow, about 20mm long, with a spur of 8mm long and obtuse at the end. The capsule is linear, 2-3.5cm long, and beaded. The seeds are oblate, black, with densely covered small pits on the surface. The flowering period is May-June, and the fruiting period is June-July.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown under forests on hillsides or in wetlands beside ditches.

[Chemical composition] The whole plant of Coptis chinensis contains corypalline, protopine, α-allocryptopine, ca-paurimine, capaurine, and racemic tetrahydropalmatine.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; astringent; cold

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies; reduces swelling and relieves pain. Mainly used for carbuncle, furuncle, nameless swelling, corneal congestion

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 3-9g. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash it for application.
