【English name】 Bruguiera cylindrica (L.) Bl.

[Source] Medicinal material source: the fruit and hypocotyl of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza of the rhizophoraceae family.

[Original morphology] A tree, up to 20m tall, with a breast diameter of 20-25cm; with plate-like prop roots at the base; the bark has small corky lenticels. Simple leaves are opposite; petiole is 1-4.5cm long; stipule is 2.5-3.5cm long; leaf blade is elliptic-oblong, 7-17cm long, 2-8cm wide, with acute or acuminate apex, cuneate leaf base, entire, shiny, and thinly leathery. The cymes grow in the upper leaf axils, about the same length as the petiole; the peduncle is 6-8mm long, with 2-3 flowers; the flowers are light green, about 1cm long; the calyx is 8-lobed, the lobes are linear, about the same length as the calyx tube, the calyx tube is 4-6mm long and smooth; the petals are shorter than the calyx, 3-4mm long, 2 deeply lobed, with 1 spine between the cracks, and 3 or 4 spines at the tip of the lobes; the stamens are shorter than the petals. There is one seed, which germinates before the fruit leaves the mother tree. The hypocotyl is often curved and 8-15 cm long.

【Functions and indications】Astringent and antidiarrheal. Mainly for chronic diarrhea

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: 3-10g, mash fresh product into juice; or grind dry product into powder.

【Note】 It is forbidden to use for those suffering from diarrhea caused by damp-heat.
