[Source] It is the whole herb of Passiflora edulis, a plant of the Passifloraceae family. Harvested in summer and autumn.

[Original form] Perennial twining herb. The stem is slender, up to about 4 meters long, with fine hairs. The young stem has longitudinal ridges, and the old stem is cylindrical with a single tendril attached to the leaf axil. The leaves are alternate, palmately 3 or 5 deeply lobed, 6 to 10 cm long, 9 to 15 cm wide, the lobes are lanceolate, pointed at the tip, serrated margin, and heart-shaped with convex base; the petiole is 5 cm long, with 2 nectaries at the tip near the leaf base. The flowers are solitary in the leaf axils, and the pedicels are 5 to 7 cm long; there are 3 bracts, which are small, wrinkled and uneven; there are 5 sepals, which are rectangular, with rounded tips and a protrusion on the back; there are 5 petals, which are light pink, and the corona is whisker-like, dark purple or light purple; there are 5 stamens, which can rotate like a clock; there are 8 styles of ovary superior. The berries are oval and yellow when ripe. Flowering period is autumn.

【Habitat distribution】Mostly cultivated in gardens.

[Chemical composition] The flowers and fruit clusters contain pyrocatechol, gallic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, myristic acid, sitosterol, glucose, etc.

[Properties and flavors] "Sichuan Chinese Materia Medica": "Warm in nature, bitter in taste, non-toxic."

【Functions and indications】 ① Wang Dianxiang's "Pharmacognosy": "It is used for neuralgia, insomnia, menstrual pain and diarrhea, and has anesthetic and sedative effects."

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 1 to 3 qian.

[Additional prescription] For treating wind-heat headache: passionflower leaves, chrysanthemum, mulberry leaves, selfheal, and lotus leaves. Take it as a decoction. (Sichuan Traditional Chinese Medicine Records)
