[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb of Polygonum multiflorum of the Polygonaceae family.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 60-100cm high. The stem is erect, multi-branched in the upper part, densely covered with stellate hairs and long stiff hairs, and the internodes in the lower part are short. Simple leaves are alternate; leaf blades are broadly ovate, 6-13cm long, 7-16cm wide, palmately 3-7 deeply lobed, sparsely covered with long stiff hairs and stellate hairs on the upper side, densely covered with stellate hairs on the lower side, with stiff hairs growing on the veins, base truncated or cordate, forming narrow wings along the lower edge of the petiole; lower petiole is 3-6cm long, upper petiole is shorter, covered with stellate hairs and long stiff hairs; stipule sheath is membranous, obliquely short-tubular, with a long tip at the apex, densely covered with stellate hairs and sparse long stiff hairs. The inflorescence is a capitate raceme; the peduncle has stellate hairs and long stiff hairs; the bracts are lanceolate, covered with long stiff hairs; the perianth is light red, 5-lobed, and the lobes are ovate-lanceolate; there are 8 stamens, shorter than the perianth; there are 3 styles, fused at the bottom, and the ovary is superior, ovate, and has 3 edges. Achenes are triangular-ovate, 3-ribbed, and dull. Flowering and fruiting period is August-September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in mountains, hills, and shady and moist places near water.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; slightly astringent; cool

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies; stops bleeding. Mainly used for dysentery, carbuncle, swelling, scabies, and bleeding due to trauma

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 9-15g. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash it for application; or grind it into powder and sprinkle it on the affected area.
