【Other name】 Thistle

[Source] Medicinal material source: the root or whole herb of the tobacco thunbergii plant of the Asteraceae family.

[Original form] Tobacco and thistle are perennial herbs, 1-3m high. The stem is erect, branched at the top, and covered with spider-like hairs. The basal leaves and leaves on the lower stem wither during flowering. The leaves are broadly elliptic, 40-50cm long and about 20cm wide, with a pointed tip and a base gradually narrowing into a winged petiole. They are deeply pinnately divided, with long sharp teeth on the upper edge of the lobes and thorns on the edges. The leaves in the middle of the stem are narrowly elliptic, 15-25cm long, sessile, slightly clasping the stem or not clasping the stem, and the leaves on the upper stem gradually become smaller. The capitula is solitary at the end of the branches, sometimes in pairs, with long or short stalks, drooping, and 3-5cm in diameter; the involucre is ovate; the bracts are about 8 layers, linear-lanceolate, the outer layer is short, with sharp thorns at the apex, reflexed outward, and the mid-rib on the back is purple; all flowers are closed, the corolla is purple, 1.7-2.2cm long, the tube is filamentous, 2-2.5 times longer than the eaves. Achenes are oblong, 3-3.5mm long, slightly flat; pappus is grayish white, feathery, up to 2.2cm long. Flowering and fruiting period is June to September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: grows on river banks, grasslands, and hillside forest edges.

【Nature and flavor】 Sweet; bitter; cool

【Functions and indications】Detoxification; hemostasis; tonification. Mainly used for sores, malaria, bleeding due to trauma, and physical weakness

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 4.5-9g, fresh product can be used up to 30-60g; simmer with wine or mash the fresh product into juice. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash fresh product for application.
