[Source] It is the whole herb of Gentiana scabra of the Gentianaceae family. In late spring and early summer, collect the whole herb after it has bloomed and use it dried or fresh.

[Original form] Biennial herb, about 10 cm tall, growing in clumps. The stems and branches are purple-red. Simple leaves are opposite, sessile; round to ovate, about 1 cm long and 5 mm wide. The apex is pointed, the margin is entire, and both sides are covered with fine white hairs. The flowers are solitary at the top of the branches, blue-purple; the calyx is tubular, 5-lobed, and covered with white soft hairs; the corolla is campanulate, 5-lobed, with the folds entire or 2-lobed; there are 5 stamens, attached to the corolla tube; the ovary is superior, 1-chambered, with a short style and a 2-lobed stigma. The capsule extends out of the calyx, splits in the shape of a lip, and contains many seeds. The flowering period is between spring and summer.

[Habitat distribution] Grown on sunny hillsides. Distributed in Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hebei, Jiangsu and Sichuan.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies. Treat intestinal abscess, furuncle, carbuncle, scrofula, red and swollen eyes.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 1 to 4 qian (0.5 to 1 liang for fresh ones). For external use: grind into powder and apply on skin.

【Note】 Do not use if you have ulcerated carbuncle or are suffering from cold and deficiency.

[Additional prescription] ① Treat scrofula, carbuncle, and swelling on the back: Gentiana scabra, Tribulus terrestris. Grind into powder and apply with oil.
