Existing classic communication technologies are gradually approaching their theoretical limits, reaching technical "ceilings" such as difficulty in increasing capacity, high coverage costs, and high system energy consumption. How to break through this constraint is a concern of the industry.

The way of processing information in classic communication is "modularization", which mainly relies on resource stacking to improve network performance. Therefore, the price of improving the performance of communication systems is the rapid increase in network complexity. "Unlike classic communication, the new communication technology that integrates communication and intelligence can replace "modularization" separation optimization with "end-to-end" through-type optimization, and achieve a significant improvement in the overall performance of the communication system with a simpler network structure." said Xu Xiaodong, professor at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and vice president of Zhongguancun Pan-Link Institute.

Based on multiple key technologies of communication and intelligence integration, the team led by Zhang Ping, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, built the world's first 6G field test network integrating communication and intelligence, verifying the feasibility of 4G and 5G links with 6G transmission capabilities. This communication system is designed to be intelligent and simple, and its three core indicators of capacity, coverage, and efficiency have also been significantly improved. This achievement and its innovative theory were published in the form of a paper in the Chinese communication journal "Journal of Communications".

Compared with 5G, 6G has higher speed, lower latency, and wider connection density, and can also achieve deep integration of communication with artificial intelligence and intelligent perception. "The new generation of communication technology needs to explore new paths and move from 'stacked innovation' to 'disruptive innovation'," said Zhang Ping.
