Why do we always forget words when we pick up a pen?

1. Over-reliance on the Internet: Modern people use keyboards more and write less by hand. “If you can speak, don’t type; if you can type, don’t write.” The way of communication tends to be simplified and superficial.

2. Motivated forgetting: There is a kind of "motivated forgetting" in psychology, which means that people forget certain people, things and objects in order to avoid some unpleasant experiences or inner conflicts. After leaving school, many people are reluctant to review those very complex words, so as not to recall the fear of being dominated by "reciting and memorizing the whole text".

3. Weak basic knowledge: When people forget a word, many of them simply replace it with a word that looks or sounds similar, or even deliberately write it in a sloppy way in an attempt to get away with it. In fact, you haven't learned the words you don't know how to write. If you always write randomly, you won't even be sure of the words you know how to write.

How to get rid of the problem of “forgetting words when writing”?

1. Associative memory method: Observe the words on food packaging and takeout boxes, remember their appearance and writing methods. You can also associate uncommon words with things you like to deepen your memory. For example, you may not recognize the words marked in red in group A in the picture below; but how many people still don’t recognize them in group B?

2. Practice handwriting more: Give yourself more time to write with a pen, reduce your reliance on electronic products, write the words you don’t know several times, and slowly you won’t forget the words you write when you pick up a pen.

3. Keep looking up the dictionary: When you encounter a word you are not sure how to write, do not just write a random word to get by. You should choose an authoritative dictionary or website to look up to deepen your impression of the correct way to write it.

4. Understand the historical allusions: For example, "墨守成规" is because the Warring States thinker Mozi was very good at defending the city, and "墨守" has become a routine. If you only understand its extended meaning (sticking to the old rules and refusing to change), it is easy to mistakenly write it as "墨守陈规". Another example is "世外桃源" comes from Tao Yuanming's "桃花源记", so it will not be mistakenly written as "世外桃园".
