There is a lot of fog in autumn and winter. Please keep this defense guide

With the arrival of autumn and winter, my country has also entered a period of frequent fog. Heavy fog can lead to reduced visibility and worsening air quality. In severe cases, it may cause traffic accidents and even casualties. So, how many levels are there for heavy fog warnings? When warnings are issued at all levels, what kind of defensive measures should we take? What precautions should we take when driving in foggy weather? Let's find out.

How are fog levels classified?

Fog is a visible aggregate of a large number of tiny milky white water droplets and ice crystals suspended in the near-ground atmosphere. According to the visibility, it can be divided into five levels: light fog, heavy fog, dense fog, extremely dense fog and extremely dense fog.

Studies have shown that dense fog will have an impact on road traffic, extremely dense fog will have a significant impact on road traffic, and extremely dense fog will have a very serious impact on road traffic.

How should we respond when a heavy fog warning is issued?

According to the meteorological industry standard "Fog Warning Levels" revised in 2014, heavy fog warnings are divided into three levels, represented by yellow, orange and red, among which red warning is the highest level.

Different levels of fog warnings require different defense measures for relevant units and individuals. When the highest level red warning is issued, airports, highways, ferry terminals and other units should take timely traffic safety control measures, such as suspending aircraft takeoffs and landings at airports, temporarily closing highways, and temporarily suspending ferry operations; drivers should take precautionary measures in foggy weather, adopt reasonable driving methods according to environmental conditions, and find safe parking areas as soon as possible; the public should not engage in outdoor activities.

Accidents are more frequent in foggy weather, so driving safely is important

Fog is one of the weather conditions that has the greatest impact on human traffic activities, often leading to highway closures and airport flight delays. According to the Ministry of Public Security's road traffic accident statistics, about 10% of traffic accidents in my country are directly related to bad weather such as fog, rain and snow each year. So, when fog strikes, how can we ensure driving safety?

The first thing is to slow down, but do not slam on the brakes when slowing down to avoid rear-end collisions. Secondly, turn on the fog lights, low beam lights, clearance lights, front and rear tail lights and hazard warning flashers at the right time, but be careful not to turn on the high beam lights. In addition, honk the horn frequently and remember the principle of "drive on the inner side of two-lane roads and drive in the middle of three-lane roads." If visibility is too low, find the nearest exit and leave the highway as soon as possible. If you are far away from the exit, you can choose to park the car on the emergency parking strip of the highway, turn on the fog lights, clearance lights and tail lights, and set up warning signs 150 meters away from the direction of the oncoming vehicle. People in the car must get off and hide outside the guardrail.

In addition to traffic, fog also has a certain impact on human health. Pollutants in foggy days will become difficult to diffuse and settle after combining with water vapor in the air, which makes most of the pollutants gather at the height where people often move. Moreover, some harmful substances will become more toxic when combined with water vapor. Therefore, in foggy weather, the public should avoid or reduce outdoor activities to avoid harm to health.
