[Source] Medicinal material source: The vines and roots of Schisandra chinensis, a plant of the Schisandraceae family.

[Original form] Deciduous vine. The twigs are brown-purple with ridges and leathery wings on the ridges. The old branches are gray-black with obvious lenticels. Bud scales are large and often persistent. Petiole 1.5-5.5cm long; leaves papery or nearly leathery; leaf blade ovate or elliptic-ovate, 6-11cm long, 3-8cm wide, mucronate at apex, broadly cuneate at base, dark green above, light green or powdery below, with sparse reticulate veins. Flowers are unisexual and dioecious; flowers are light yellow; perianth has 7-8 petals; stamen group is oval, separate, with 28-60 stamens arranged in 3-4 rows; pistil group is nearly spherical or oblong-elliptical, with 50-60 carpels and very short style. The aggregate fruit is 4-8cm long, and the small berries are oblate or oblate, reddish-yellow. There are 2 seeds, which are flat semicircular or oblong-elliptical, with tubercle-like protrusions on the seed coat. The flowering period is May-July, and the fruiting period is August-September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing under forests or beside streams at an altitude of 500-2000m.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The vine stem is long cylindrical, with few branches, 30-50cm long and 2-4cm in diameter. The surface is brown or dark brown, with longitudinal grooves of varying depths and yellow dot-like lenticels; the surface of young branches has winged edges. The texture is solid and the bark is tough; the bark in cross section is brown in color and sometimes easily separated from the heartwood; the xylem is light brown in color and small vascular holes can be seen arranged in rows radially; the central pith is dark brown and often cracked or hollow. Slight smell, slightly astringent taste. Spicy and cool. The roots are vine-like, but thicker, with strong longitudinal cracks in the cortex forming deep grooves, soft edges and few lateral roots.

[Chemical composition] The stem contains henricine. The fruit contains wnlignan A1, A2, epiwulignan A1, epis-chisandrone, epienshicine, schisan-drone, pre-gomisin, dextrorotatory anwulignan, schisanhenol, epi-enschicine methyl ether, enshicine, schisanhenric acid, schisantherin B, schisanhenrin, and kadsuric acid.

[Pharmacological action] This product is extracted with ethanol and made into an extract. Oral administration of 5g/kg can significantly prolong the sleeping time of mice with sodium pentobarbital. Oral administration of 5g/kg has antitussive (ammonia aerosol method) and expectorant (phenol red method) effects on mice. The schisandra chinensis extract contained in the fruit has the effect of reducing serum transaminase in mice with carbon tetrachloride liver damage.

[Toxicity] Mice were given a single oral administration of 15 g/kg of the ethanol extract and observed for 72 hours. The animals responded well, had normal appetite, and no one died. This indicates that the preparation has no obvious toxic or side effects.

【Meridian】 Liver; Spleen

【Functions and indications】 Dispel wind and dampness; promote qi circulation and relieve pain; activate blood circulation and stop bleeding. It is used for rheumatic pain, heart and stomach pain, tuberculosis and vomiting blood, amenorrhea, irregular menstruation, traumatic injury, and wound swelling.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 15-30g; or soak in wine.
