[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb of Scutellaria baicalensis, a plant of the Lamiaceae family.

[Original morphology] Scutellaria baicalensis, a perennial upright herb. The stem is 12-36cm high, quadrangular, sparsely covered with upward-curved fine hairs on the ribs, or almost glabrous. The leaves have short petioles, 1-3mm long; the leaf blades are narrowly triangular-ovate, triangular-ovate or lanceolate, 1.5-3.8cm long, 0.4-1.4cm wide, glabrous above, sparsely pubescent along the veins below, sometimes almost glabrous, with numerous concave glandular dots. The flowers are solitary in the leaf axils at the top of the stem, leaning to one side; the calyx is 3-4mm long, the scutellum is about 1mm high, and both are significantly larger when fruiting; the corolla is blue-purple, 2-2.2cm long, the front of the base of the corolla tube is shallowly vesicular and geniculate, and the lower lip is circular-ovate in the middle; there are 4 stamens, didyna; the front of the disk is raised; the ovary is 4-lobed, and the lobes are equal in size. The nutlets are elliptical, tuberculate, and have a navel near the base of the ventral whiskers. The flowering period is from June to August, and the fruiting period is from August to September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: grows on grass slopes or meadows.

[Chemical composition] The above-ground part contains chrysin and chrysin-7-O-β-D-glucuronide.

【Nature and flavor】 Slightly bitter; cool in nature

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and dampness; detoxifies and reduces swelling. Mainly used for hepatitis; ascites due to liver cirrhosis; appendicitis; mastitis; snake and insect bites; traumatic injuries

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 15-30g; or squeeze into juice. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash fresh product for application.
