[Other name] Wild Angelica

[Source] Medicinal material source: It is the root of the Umbelliferae plant Xiayan Gu Angelica.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 1-2m high. The roots are cylindrical, thick and brown. The stem is hollow, has fine longitudinal ridges, and is smooth and hairless. Leaves are two to three times trifoliate pinnately divided, basal leaves have long petioles; petioles of leaves on the stem are 8-17cm long, the lower part of the petiole is swollen into a hooded sheath, up to 6cm wide, smooth and glabrous; leaf blade whorls are broadly triangular-ovate in outline, 11-15 (20)cm long, 11-17cm wide, the terminal lobes are decurrent, with serrated or irregularly deep teeth on the margins, and blunt tips at the tooth ends, the leaf blades are dark green on the surface, pale green on the back, and glabrous on both sides; leaves at the top of the stem are simplified into sac-like sheaths. The compound umbel is nearly spherical, with a diameter of 7-15cm; the rays are 20-50, with short rough hairs; the involucral bracts are about 10, narrowly lanceolate; the calyx teeth are not obvious, the petals are white, broadly ovate; the style base is flat, and the margins are wavy. The fruit is oval, 5-10mm long and 3-5mm wide. The fruit edges are all protruding and thick-winged. The side edges are narrower than the fruit body. There are many oil tubes connected in a ring shape. The flowering period is July-August, and the fruiting period is August-September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: grows in valleys, under forests, and in grass or bushes by ditches.

[Properties] Identification by properties: The root is thinner and conical in shape than that of Angelica dahurica. The appearance is brown, with many horizontal wrinkles on the upper part, vertical lines on the lower part, and scars from the severed lateral roots. The cross section is yellow and has a celery-like smell.

[Chemical composition] The plant contains imperatorin, isoimperatorin, phellopterin, oxypeucedanin, bergapten, and umbellipuenin[1].
