[Source] Medicinal material source: The bark of Populus deltoides, a plant of the Salicaceae family.

[Original form] Tree, up to 30m high. The bark is dark gray-brown and cracked when old; the crown is cylindrical. The buds are long oval, with a gradually pointed tip, light red, and rich in viscosity. The leaves of long branches are flat triangular, usually wider than long, about 7.5cm long, with short and gradually pointed tips, truncated or broadly cuneate bases, and obtusely serrated edges; the leaves of short branches are diamond-shaped triangular or diamond-shaped ovate, 5-10cm long and 4-9cm wide; the petiole is slightly flattened at the top, 2-4.5cm long, and has no glandular dots at the tip. The male inflorescence is 4-8cm long with 15-30 stamens; the female inflorescence is 10-15cm long. The capsule is 2-valved, with a pointed tip and a slender stalk. The flowering period is April and the fruiting period is May.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: light-loving, cold-resistant, drought-resistant, slightly tolerant to salinity and waterlogging.

【Properties】 Identification of properties: The bark is flaky. The outer surface is dark gray-brown or black-brown, rough, and grooved. After removing the outer skin, it appears yellow-white or brown-yellow and fibrous. The inner surface is relatively flat, yellow-white or yellow-brown, and light in texture. The fracture surface is flaky and fibrous. Slight odor, light taste.

【Chemical composition】 The cortex contains rhamnetin and rhamnocitrin. The flower buds contain 3,3-dimethylallyl-trans-caffeate, 3,3-dimethylallyl-cis-caffeate, isopent-3-enyl-cis-caffeate, and isopent-3-enyl-trans-caffeate.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; cold

【Functions and indications】 Cools blood and detoxifies; dispels wind and dampness. Mainly used for colds, hepatitis, dysentery, rheumatic pain, athlete's foot, burns, scabies, baldness

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 10-30g; or soak in wine. For external use: take appropriate amount, grind into powder and apply on the affected area; or boil into paste and apply.
