The leaves are opposite, broadly ovate or elliptic, becoming lanceolate upwards, with pointed apex, obtuse base, entire margin, and sparsely short hairs on both sides; the petiole is short. The cymes grow at the top of the stem and in the leaf axils; the flowers are dark purple-red. The follicles are oblong-conical, about 4.5 cm long, and crack open when ripe, releasing the seeds. The seeds are flat, brown-red, and have long, soft, silky hairs on the top. Flowering period: summer and autumn.
