【English name】 Nippon Hawthorn Fruit

[Other names] Southern hawthorn, small-leaf hawthorn, red fruit

[Source] It is the fruit of Crataegus cuneats Sieb. Et Zucc., a plant of the Rosaceae family. The fruits are harvested in autumn when they are ripe, blanched in boiling water and then dried or dried directly.

【Original form】Deciduous shrub. The branches are densely grown with fine thorns, and the young branches are pubescent. The leaves are obovate, 2-6 cm long, 0.8-2.5 cm wide, often 3-lobed at the tip, with a narrow cuneate base extending down to the petiole, and sharp, double-serrated edges. The umbel, peduncle and pedicel are all pubescent and the flowers are white. The pear fruit is spherical or pear-shaped, red or yellow, about 1 to 2 cm in diameter, with a large, reflexed persistent calyx. The flowering period is from May to June, and the fruiting period is from August to October.

[Habitat distribution] It grows on sunny hillsides or mountain bushes. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Yunnan and Sichuan.

[Properties] The fruit is small, spherical, with a diameter of 0.8 to 1.4 cm, and some are pressed into a cake shape. The surface is brown to brown-red with fine wrinkles, the apex is sunken, there are remnants of calyx, and there are fruit stalks at the base or they have fallen off. It is hard, has thin flesh and tastes slightly sour and astringent.
