The flowers are large, up to 2 cm in diameter, yellow-white, and 4 in number; the petals are round with wrinkles on them; the stamen filaments are slender and attached to the edge of the large square disk. The capsule has 4 narrow wing-like sharp edges and is yellow to red when ripe. The seeds are black with a dark red aril. The flowering period is from May to June, and the fruiting period is from July to September.
