[Source] This product is the dried mature seed kernel of the Poaceae plant Coix lacryma-jobi L. var. ma-yuen (Roman.) Stapf. When the fruits are ripe in autumn, the plants are harvested, dried in the sun, the fruits are beaten, dried again, the shells, yellow-brown seed coats and impurities are removed, and the seed kernels are collected.

[Properties] This product is broadly oval or oblong, 4-8mm long and 3-6mm wide. The surface is milky white and smooth, with occasional remnants of yellowish-brown seed coat. One end is blunt and round, the other end is wider and slightly concave, with a light brown dot-shaped hilum. The back is round and convex, and there is a wide and deep longitudinal groove on the ventral side. The texture is solid, the cross section is white and powdery. Slight odor, slightly sweet taste.

Mainly starch granules, single granules are round or polyhedral, 2-20μm in diameter, and have a star-shaped hilum; compound granules are rare, usually composed of 2-3 sub-granules, and starch granules appear brown-red when added with iodine test solution.
