[Other names] Sparrow eggs, chicken intestines grass (Shaanxi Chinese Herbal Medicine), goose-ined grass, dew medicine (Guizhou Medicinal Plant Catalog), bell grass, large-leaf rice grass (Hunan Pharmacopoeia).

[Source] It is the whole herb of the Caryophyllaceae plant . Harvest the whole herb in summer and autumn, wash it, and dry it in the shade for later use.

[Original morphology] Annual or biennial herb, 10 to 30 cm tall, with short soft hairs all over. The roots have a slender taproot and thin lateral roots. Stems numerous, clustered, slightly spreading, densely covered with white short soft hairs, internodes 1 to 3 cm long. Leaves are opposite, ovate, sessile, 4-7 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, pointed or acute at the apex, with ciliates, and sparsely pubescent on both sides. Inflorescence sparsely distributed at the branch ends; bracts and bracteoles are leafy, ovate, densely pubescent; pedicels are slender, 6-8 mm long, sometimes up to 1 cm, densely pubescent or glandular; sepals are 5, lanceolate, 3-4 mm long, 3-veined, and pubescent; petals are 5, obovate, white, and entire; stamens are 10, shorter than calyx; ovary is ovate, with 3 styles. The capsule is slightly longer than the calyx, ovate, and split into 6 lobes when mature. Seeds kidney-shaped, brown.

[Habitat distribution] It grows in wastelands or fields beside roads, or is also scattered on dry hillsides. It is distributed from the northeast through the Yellow River and Yangtze River basins to all provinces and regions in South China.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, cool.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat, improves eyesight and detoxifies. Treats red eyes, cough, and gingivitis.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 0.5 to 1 liang. For external use: mash and apply or plug the nose.

[Additional prescription] ① To treat cough caused by tuberculosis: 50 cents to 1 ounce of small aconite, decocted in water and taken orally. (Hunan Pharmacopoeia)
