The efficacy and function of Qilidan

Traditional Chinese medicine is very effective in treating some special diseases, but we still need to understand it before taking it. Today we will talk about some common knowledge about the medicinal material Qilindan.

[Other Names] Human hair, Veratrum

[Source] Medicinal material source: the rhizome and root of Veratrum nigra of the Liliaceae family.

[Original form] Black purple Veratrum is a perennial herb. The plant height is 30-100cm. The base of the stem has a mesh-like fibrous web. Leaves are numerous and nearly basal; leaf blades are narrowly ribbon-shaped or narrowly oblong, 15-60cm long, 0.5-4cm wide, with acute apex and base extending downward to form a petiole, clasping the stem, and glabrous on both sides. The panicle is shortened or expanded and elongated, with the axis and pedicels densely covered with white cottony hairs, and the flowers on the lateral inflorescences are about 7mm long; male flowers and bisexual flowers are on the same plant or both are bisexual flowers; 6 tepals, reflexed, black-purple or dark purple-violet, oblong or oblong-lanceolate, 5-7mm long, 2-3mm wide, sessile at the base, the back of the outer tepals covered with white short hairs or almost glabrous; 6 stamens, 2-3mm long; ovary glabrous, 3-chambered, with 3 styles. The capsule is oval or ovate, three-edged, 1-1.5 cm long and about 1 cm wide. Seeds flat, winged. Flowering and fruiting period is July to September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: grows under hillside forests or on grasslands.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The rhizome is slightly cylindrical, 1-2 cm long and 0.6-1.2 cm in diameter. There are remnants of leaf bases at the junction of the top and the stem, which are mostly dead and rotten and brown in color. The roots are clustered and thin, 3-10 cm long, gray-brown, with dense wrinkles, light and brittle, and easy to break.

【Nature and flavor】 Pungent; bitter; cold; toxic

【Functions and indications】Emetic; dissipating blood stasis; relieving pain; killing parasites. It is used for stroke, mania, excessive sputum, bruises and swelling, and scabies.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: grind into powder, take 0.3-0.6g each time. For external use: take appropriate amount, grind into powder and spread; or soak in warm water and then mash and apply.

【Note】 It is forbidden for people with weak constitution and pregnant women to take the medicine. Fujian Pharmacopoeia: "Pregnant women should not take it. It should not be taken with ginseng, asarum, and peony."
