【English name】STYRAX

[Other names] Styrax oil, flowing styrax

[Source] This product is the fragrant resin that oozes out of the trunk of Liquidambar orientalis Mill ., a plant of the genus Liquidambar in the Hamamelidaceae family. It is made through processing and refining.

【Properties】 This product is a semi-fluid thick liquid. Brownish yellow or dark brown, translucent. The texture is sticky. The smell is fragrant. This product is soluble in 90% ethanol, carbon disulfide, chloroform or glacial acetic acid, and slightly soluble in ether.

[Identification] (1) Mix 1 g of this product with 3 g of fine sand, place in a test tube, add 5 ml of potassium permanganate solution, and heat slightly. A noticeable benzaldehyde aroma will be produced.

[Content Determination] Take about 1.25g of this product, weigh it accurately, put it in a conical flask, add 25ml of newly prepared ethanol-based potassium hydroxide titration solution (0.5mol/L), heat and reflux for 1 hour, quickly evaporate the ethanol at low temperature, add 50ml of hot water to the residue to make it evenly dispersed, cool, add 80ml of water and 50ml of magnesium sulfate solution (1.5→50), mix well, let it stand for 10 minutes, filter, wash the residue with 20ml of water, combine the washing liquid and the filtrate, add hydrochloric acid to make it acidic, and shake and extract with ether 4 times, 40ml each time. Combine the ether solutions and extract with sodium bicarbonate solution (1→20) by shaking for 5 times (20ml, 20ml, 10ml, 10ml, 10ml), washing the separated aqueous solution each time with 20ml of the same ether. Combine the aqueous solutions, add hydrochloric acid to make it acidic, and then extract with chloroform by shaking for 4 times (30ml, 20ml, 20ml, 10ml). Each time the chloroform extract is filtered through the same cotton wool layer filled with anhydrous sodium sulfate. When the combined filtrate is evaporated to about 10 ml, stop evaporation and allow it to evaporate naturally to remove all solvents. Dissolve the residue with 10 ml of neutral ethanol (phenol red indicator) while warming, cool, add 2 to 3 drops of phenol red indicator, and titrate with sodium hydroxide titrant (0.1 mol/L). Every 1ml of sodium hydroxide titration solution (0.1mol/L) is equivalent to 14.82mg of cinnamic acid (C9H8O2).
