[Source] The branches and leaves of the Euphorbiaceae plant Abacus . Harvested in summer and autumn, chopped, sun-dried or used fresh.

[Chemical composition] The whole plant contains phenols, amino acids and sugars. The stems and leaves contain tannins.

[Pharmacological action] The water decoction and sugar-containing decoction (100%) of Abacus chinensis leaves have an inhibitory effect on Shigella dysenteriae in vitro (plate hole method), with an effective concentration of 1:1280, and have a bactericidal effect (test tube method). The water decoction also has a certain antibacterial effect on other Shigella dysenteriae (Schwanson's, Freund's, Sohn's) and Salmonella (Typhoid, Paratyphoid A, Choleraesuis, Enteritidis), while the sugar-containing decoction is slightly less effective and is only effective against Shigella dysenteriae, Freund's, and Typhoid and Paratyphoid A.

【Properties and flavors】 "Guangxi Chinese Materia Medica": "bitter, cool; slightly toxic."

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and dampness, detoxifies and reduces swelling. Treat dysentery, jaundice, stranguria, leucorrhea, colds, sore throat, carbuncles, lacquer sores, and itchy rashes.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 0.5-1 liang; or grind into powder. For external use: decoct in water for washing or mash for application.

【Note】 "Jiangxi Folk Herbal Prescriptions": "Pregnant women should not take it."

[Additional prescription] ① Treat dysentery: 5 to 7 qian of fresh leaves of Abacus sphaerocephala. Mash it and stew it with boiling water. (Fujian Folk Herbs)

[Clinical application] Treatment of gastroenteritis: Take 1 jin of abacus leaves, add 1000 ml of water, boil for about 2 hours, make it into 500 ml, cool, filter, add preservatives and set aside. Take 50 to 100 ml orally each time, 3 times a day. Generally, on the first day after taking the medicine, abdominal distension, abdominal pain, and diarrhea will be relieved and appetite will increase. After 3 to 5 days of continued treatment, the symptoms will disappear completely. If there are no complications, no other drugs should be added. A total of 100 cases of acute enteritis, chronic enteritis, and simple diarrhea were treated, 88 of them were cured, 4 improved, 1 was ineffective, and 7 discontinued treatment. The cure rate is 88%.
