Snowberry is a kind of traditional Chinese medicine and is very helpful for many diseases. Let us give a brief introduction to Xuelikai.

[Other names] Snake pine nut (Common Folk Herbs in Zhejiang), landmine, kidnapper medicine (Hunan Pharmacopoeia).

[Source] It is the root or leaf of Clematis unifolia, a plant of the Ranunculaceae family.

【Original form】 Evergreen vine. The root is slender and strip-shaped, with the middle part enlarged into a narrow spindle-shaped tuber, and the surface is yellowish brown. The stem is thin, ridged, and sparsely covered with white short hairs. The leaves are simple and opposite, oblong or ovate-lanceolate, 7-16 cm long, 2-6 cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, shallowly cordate at the base, sparsely shallowly serrated at the margin, thin and papery, with short white hairs adnate on the veins below or nearly glabrous, and 5 veins; the petiole is 3.5-5.5 cm long. The cymes are axillary, usually with 1 flower, sometimes 3-5 flowers, and the pedicels are slender; the perianth is 4, ovate, 1-2 cm long, white or light yellow, and densely covered with white short hairs on the outside; the stamens are numerous, and the filaments are covered with white long hairs. Achenes are flat-ovate, pubescent, with pinnate styles up to 3.5 cm long. The flowering period is from November to December. The fruiting period is March to April of the following year.

[Habitat distribution] It grows on the edge of forests on shady hillsides or in thickets beside streams. Distributed throughout my country's area south of the Yangtze River.

【Properties and flavors】 "Hunan Pharmacopoeia": "bitter, warm, non-toxic."

[Functions and indications] It can promote the circulation of qi and blood, has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, and has analgesic effects on pain in the head, stomach, abdomen, muscles and joints. It can also treat bronchitis, carbuncle, swelling and infection.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 1-3 qian, ground into wine, 0.5-1 qian. For external use: grind with wine or mash for application.

[Additional prescription] ① Treating high fever and acute convulsions: Grind 3-4 grams of snow lily roots into juice with boiled rice water, take once in the morning and before dinner.

[Clinical Application] Pain relief: The dried rhizomes of Clematis unifolia are processed into an injection solution, each milliliter containing 1 gram of the crude drug. For intramuscular injection, 2 ml for adults each time; 1 ml for children over 2 years old, 0.5 ml for children under 2 years old. It can be used repeatedly when necessary. A total of 100 cases were clinically observed, with 32 cases showing marked effect (pain disappeared), 33 cases showing effectiveness (pain was significantly relieved), 19 cases showing relief (pain was somewhat relieved), and 16 cases showing ineffectiveness. It is effective for abdominal pain, wound pain, joint pain, muscle pain all over the body, headache, etc. Most of the time, the effect is seen within 15 minutes after injection, and the patient quickly falls asleep quietly. It may have a sedative effect on the central nervous system. No adverse reactions were found. In addition, the root tubers were ground into powder and made into pills. Adults took 9 grams daily to treat 256 cases of gastric spasm, and most of them achieved rapid analgesic effect.
