[Source] It is the leafy stems and branches of the Hubei pepper or velvety pepper of the Piperaceae family. From August to October, cut the stems and branches with leaves, dry them in the sun, and tie them into small bundles.

[Habitat distribution] It is mainly produced in Sichuan, Hunan, Yunnan and other places; it is also produced in Guizhou, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hubei and other places.

[Properties] The dry stems and branches are flat and cylindrical, about 30 cm long and 1 to 3 mm in diameter. The surface is gray-brown or gray-brown with longitudinal stripes, swollen nodes, adventitious roots on them, and internodes 7 to 9 cm long. Light and crisp. The phloem is narrow in cross section, the vascular bundles and rays are arranged radially alternately, and the xylem has many small holes. There is gray-brown pith in the center. Dry leaves are gray-green and wrinkled. It has a light fragrance and a spicy taste. The best ones are those with uniform branches, gray-brown color and complete leaves.

[Chemical composition] The whole plant of Piper velutipes contains bioalkali, tannins, monosaccharides, etc.

[Pharmacological action] A significant analgesic effect (hot plate method) was observed 20 minutes after intraperitoneal injection of pepper (50 g crude drug/kg) in mice, and lasted for one and a half hours. It has analgesic effect on post-operative pain, fracture reduction, gastrointestinal, liver and gallbladder pain, chronic low back pain, arthritis, etc. According to the observation of 118 cases, the pain disappeared in 36 cases, significantly alleviated in 22 cases, alleviated in 51 cases, and was ineffective in 9 cases, with an effective rate of 92%.
