[Original form] Hainan holly is an evergreen small tree that can reach 5m in height. Branchlets 4-sided, sparsely pubescent. Leaves are alternate; petioles are 5-7mm long; stipules are triangular; leaf blades are thin leathery or papery, broadly elliptic or obovate-oblong, 4.5-5.5cm long and 1.5-2.5cm wide. The apex is short and narrow, the base is broad and acute, olive green or chestnut brown green when dry, the back is dull, the margin is entire, the midrib is concave above, and there are 8-10 lateral veins on each side.
