The leaves are alternate, papery, elliptic to obovate-lanceolate, 3-9 cm long, 1.5-5 cm wide, obtuse to mucronate at the apex, rounded to broadly cuneate at the base, usually curled at the margin, with silvery-white scales or stellate hairs on the upper side when young, which may fall off when old, and silvery-white or mixed with brown scales on the lower side; the petiole is 5-7 mm long. The flowers are axillary, yellow-white, fragrant, with scales on the outside, about 1.2 cm long; the perianth tube is funnel-shaped, 4-lobed at the upper part, and the tube is longer than the lobes; there are 4 stamens; the style is sparsely covered with white stellate pubescence; the fruit is nearly spherical to ovoid, 6-8 mm long, initially with silvery-white or mixed with brown scales, and red when mature, and the flowering period is May to June. The fruiting period is from September to October.

It grows in dry land on hillsides, sandy land by rivers, and in thickets. Distributed in the Yangtze River Basin and the areas to its north.
