The sterile branches are erect, 5-17cm high, with densely borne leaves at the tip. The leaves are broadly obovate and 1-3cm long. The flower stems are numerous, erect or fan-shaped, 5-20cm high, and straw-colored to red. The leaves have short pseudopetioles, the leaf blades are elliptic-oblong or nearly circular, 1.2-3cm long, 1-2.2cm wide, with entire, wavy or crenate edges. Inflorescence is corymbose, many-flowered, with bracts; flowers are large, with long stalks, and dioecious; male flowers have 5 sepals, narrowly triangular to lanceolate; petals are 5, red, oblanceolate, with long claws; stamens are 10, as long as petals; scales are 5, nearly square to rectangular, apex slightly emarginate; carpels are 5, lanceolate, sterile; female flowers have 5 follicles, erect. The seeds are obovate with wings at both ends. The flowering period is June-July, and the fruiting period is July-August.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in hillside grasslands, bushes and rock crevices at an altitude of 2800-5600m.

[Pharmacological action] The alcohol extract of Rhodiola rosea can increase the SOD activity of rat erythrocytes and liver, and reduce the LPO content in plasma, myocardium and brain tissue.
