The flowers are unisexual, dioecious, clustered, mostly on old stems, and a few in leaf axils; the calyx is cup-shaped, truncate or with 5 teeth; the petals are 5, with 1 scale at the base; the male flowers have many stamens; the female flowers have 10-15 reduced stamens, the ovary has 5 styles, the stigma is large and heart-shaped, and the ovules are numerous, borne on the parietal placenta. The fruit is spherical, 5-6cm in diameter, light yellow-brown, with a thick, lignified skin and a rough surface. Fruiting period is August.
