[Source] Chimonanthus praecox (L.) Link [Calycanthus praecox L.; Meratia praecox Rehd. et Wils; Chimonanthus fragrans Lindl.], a plant of the genus Chimonanthus in the family Chimonaceae, is used as medicine for its flower buds, roots, and root bark. The flower buds are harvested in late winter and early spring; the roots and root bark can be harvested in all seasons; they are baked or sun-dried.

[Functions and indications] Flower buds: relieve heat and promote salivation, stimulate appetite, relieve depression, and relieve cough. Used for dizziness caused by summer heat, vomiting, stomach tightness caused by qi stagnation, measles, and whooping cough; used externally to treat burns and otitis media.

[Usage and Dosage] Take 1 to 2 cents of flower buds, decocted in water; for external use, soak them in peanut oil or rapeseed oil to make "wintersweet flower oil", apply to the affected area or drip into the center of the ear.
