[Original form] Perennial herb, 50-100cm high. The roots are thick, gray-brown or brown-red, conical and rarely twisted. The stem is erect, nearly quadrangular, and branched, and both the stem and branches are sparsely covered with gray long soft hairs. Leaves are opposite; petiole 5-15mm long, with spreading long soft hairs; leaf blade papery, broadly ovate or obovate-oblong, 5-14cm long, 3-7cm wide, with pointed tip and tail 5-15mm long, base cuneate, sparsely long soft hairs on both sides, and ciliate. The flower balls are nearly solitary, or only the central terminal ones have several arranged in short spikes. The bracts are 3-4mm long, shiny, glabrous, brown-purple when dry, with acuminate tips and midrib keeled on the back; the flowers are clustered in the axils of the bracts, with several bisexual flowers and 1-2 sterile flowers; the bisexual flowers are 4mm long; the tepals of bisexual flowers are lanceolate, 3-4mm long, dark purple, acuminate at the apex, and only with long soft hairs at the base outside; the tepals of sterile flowers are lanceolate-subulate, 3mm long, straw yellow, hard, and hooked at the apex; the filaments of stamens are 3mm long, sparsely long soft hairs at the base, shorter than those of the reduced stamens; the reduced stamens are rectangular, 0.6-1mm long, half or 2/3 of the height of the ovary, and 1/4 of the length of the filaments in the fruiting period, with deep lobes at the apex, 4-8 lobes, often torn or nearly fringed, sometimes branched, and occasionally finely cracked on both sides to be ciliate; the base of the ovary is with long soft hairs. The utricle is oblong-ovate, 3mm long, grayish yellow, and hairless. The seeds are oval, 2 mm long, shiny and reddish. The flowering period is August and the fruiting period is October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing under mixed woods on mountain slopes at an altitude of 1700-2300m.

[Properties] Identification by properties: The root is short and thick, long cylindrical and conical, with a large difference in thickness at both ends, a large head and a small tail, and is often twisted. The surface is brownish yellow or dark brown, with lenticels and longitudinal wrinkles. The body is hard and brittle, easy to break, and the cross section is slightly brownish red. It has a strong aroma, slightly sweet, bitter and slightly numbing taste.

[Chemical composition] Nine C29 and C21 insect metamorphosterones were isolated from the roots: cya-sterone, isocyasterone, capitasterone, ama-rasterone A, amarasterone B, sengestrone, epicyasterone, precyas-terone and poststerone. .

[Pharmacological Action] The cyasterone contained in this product has estrogen-like effects. Gavage of 10 mg/(kg·d) or 50 mg/(kg·d) to immature rats for 3 consecutive days can significantly increase the weight of the uterus, but has little effect on the weight of the ovaries.
