[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb of Juncus effusus of the Juncaceae family.

[Original form] Chestnut rush is a perennial herb, 25-35cm tall. With long rhizomes. The culm is erect, 2-3mm in diameter, hollow and without pith. The leaves grow below the middle of the culm, with basal sheaths of thin texture, 1-2 cm long, loosely clasping the stem, and inconspicuous auricles; the leaf blades are 5-10 cm long, 3-4 mm wide, and often folded in half. The inflorescence ball is 6-8mm in diameter, up to 1cm long when fruiting, usually composed of about 10 panicles, with branches up to 8cm long, each with leaf-like bracts, membranous, lanceolate; the perianth leaves are chestnut brown, needle-shaped, the outer one is about 5mm long, and the inner one is about 4mm long; there are 6 stamens, 1/2-2/3 of the perianth length, the anther is yellow, about 1mm long; the pistil has a 1.5mm long style, the stigma is linear and three-branched. The capsule is up to 6 mm long, about 3 mm in diameter, chestnut brown, and has three angular edges. The seeds are about 1 mm long, with tails about 1.2 mm long attached at each end. Flowering and fruiting period is July to September.

【Nature and flavor】 Light; neutral

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and acts as a diuretic. It is used to treat fever, thirst, irritability in children, night crying, sore throat, red eyes and blurred vision, and difficulty urinating.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocting in water, 3-9g, fresh product 15-30g.
