[Other names] Deer Longevity Tea, Deer Holding Grass (Shaanxi Chinese Materia Medica).

[Source] It is the whole herb of Japanese cyperus rotundus, a plant of the Cyperus rotundus family. Harvest in late summer and dry the whole herb.

【Original form】Perennial evergreen herb. The stem is erect, nearly round, or slightly angular. Simple leaves are alternate and nearly clustered; leaf blades are ovate, rounded at the tip, entire or with fine serrations, base cuneate or slightly rounded, leathery; petiole length is almost equal to leaf blade, or slightly longer, flat and purple. The flowers are white, growing at the top of the flower stems and arranged in racemes; the calyx is deeply lobed into 5 parts; and there are 5 petals. The capsule is oblate and often splits open when hot, releasing the seeds. Flowering period is summer.

[Habitat distribution] It grows wild under woods or in rocky and wet places. Distributed in North China, Northeast China and other places.

[Properties] The dry stem is light brown, nearly round, and has longitudinal stripes. There are 3 to 5 leaves, most of which are wrinkled, curled or broken. The complete leaves are broadly oval, with unclear fine teeth on the edges, dark green on the upper side, and purple-green on the lower side and on the petiole. The best leaves are green on the upper side and purple on the lower side.

[Chemical composition] The leaves contain arbutin, arbutin, melissop, crystal blue glycoside, quercetin, β-sitosterol, α-sitosterol, ursolic acid, oleanolic acid, and trihexadecane.

【Pharmacological action】 Methotrexate has a diuretic effect. It has a very mild inhibitory effect on human tuberculosis in vitro, but is ineffective against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

【Properties and flavors】 "Shaanxi Chinese Materia Medica": "bitter, neutral, non-toxic."

【Functions and indications】 ① "Shaanxi Chinese Materia Medica": "It is often used as a menstrual regulating medicine. It can be used as a tea substitute for gynecological yin deficiency and leucorrhea."

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 3 to 5 qian; or soaked in wine.
