【English Name】 Fructus Poniciri Trifoliatae Immaturus

[Other names] Citron, stinking citron, trifoliate orange, citron plum

[Source] It is the fruit of Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf., a plant of the Rutaceae family. In summer and autumn, pick up the young fruits that fall naturally on the ground and dry them in the sun; for the slightly larger ones, cut them in half from the middle and dry them in the sun.

[Original form] Deciduous shrub or small tree, glabrous. It is multi-branched, with flat twigs and stems with thick axillary thorns, 1 to 5 cm long. Leaves are alternate, trifoliate, and have leaf wings; terminal leaflets are obovate or elliptic, 1.5-6 cm long and 0.7-3 cm wide; lateral leaflets are open and fragrant; there are 5 sepals, which are ovate-triangular; there are 5 petals, which are obovate-spoon-shaped. The fruit is spherical, 2 to 5 cm in diameter, orange-yellow, densely covered with short soft hairs, with many oil glands, and fragrant. The flowering period is April to May, and the fruiting period is July to October.

[Habitat distribution] It is mostly cultivated as hedges on roadsides and in gardens. Mainly produced in Fujian.

[Properties] The fruit is spherical or hemispherical (cross-section), with a diameter of 2 to 3 cm. The outer surface is gray-green or green-yellow, with slightly raised wrinkles and covered with fine soft hairs. The cross-section of the fruit peel is 3-5mm thick, with 1-2 rows of oil spots on the edge, 5-7 lobes of the pulp, and a central axis width of 2-5mm. It has a fragrant smell and a slightly bitter taste.

[Chemical composition] Contains poncirin, naringin, citrifolioside, poncimarin, isoponcimarin, etc.
