[Original morphology] Pointed bracts, perennial herb, 1-2m tall. Leaves are basal; petiole is about 30cm long; pulvinus is 2-3cm long; leaf blade is oblong-acicular or ovate-acicular, 30-55cm long, 12-20cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, obtuse at the base, glabrous on both sides. The capitula has no peduncle, grows from the leaf sheath, is nearly spherical, 3-5cm in diameter, dense, and composed of 4-5 or more spikelets; the outer bracts are light yellow, oblong, 2-2.5cm long, 7-10mm wide, with a hard tip at the apex, and contain a pair of florets; the flowers are white, about 2cm long; the sepals are lanceolate, about 5mm long, and glabrous; the corolla tube is about 8mm long, and the lobes are elliptical, about 5mm long and 2mm wide; the outer whorl of reduced stamens is obovate, about 5mm long, and the inner whorl is shorter; the ovary is glabrous or pubescent at the apex, with only one chamber developed, and the ovules of the other two chambers are degenerate. The fruit is oblong, about 1.2 cm long, with a thin exocarp and one seed inside. The seeds are oval, 8-10 mm long, and covered with a red aril. Flowering period is from February to May.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in valleys and shady wetlands under forests below 1000m above sea level.

【Nature and flavor】 Sweet; light; slightly cold

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies; cools blood and stops bleeding. It is used for colds, fever, hepatitis, dysentery, red and painful urination, oral ulcers, vomiting blood, epistaxis, and metrorrhagia.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 6-15g.
