[Original form] Buckthorn shrub, rarely small tree, 1-2.5m high. Young branches are reddish brown, usually alternate or nearly opposite, with thorns at the tips; old branches are dark brown or gray-brown and smooth. Leaves are often alternate or clustered at the top of short branches; petioles are 5-16mm long and covered with white short soft hairs; stipules are long linear, hairy, and fall off early; leaf blades are papery, ovate or oblong, with acute to obtuse tips, cuneate bases, and small round teeth on the edges, dark green above and grayish white below. The flowers are green, unisexual, solitary in leaf axils or arranged in cymes of 2-3; the male flowers have 4 sepals, 4 petals, 4 stamens, a reduced ovary, and a 3-lobed stigma; the female flowers have 4 sepals, no petals, 4 filamentous reduced stamens, a spherical ovary, and a 3-4-lobed stigma. The drupe is obovoid-globose, black, and has 2 cores. The seeds are obovate, yellowish brown, shiny, and have longitudinal grooves on the back. The flowering period is May-June, and the fruiting period is July-August.
