[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb with roots of Guizhou sage and blood basin grass of the Lamiaceae family.

[Original morphology] 1. The main root is thick and short, and the fibrous roots are slender and multi-branched. The stem is single or has multiple branches at the base, thin, quadrangular, bluish-purple, glabrous below, slightly pubescent above. The leaves vary in shape. The lower ones are pinnately compound, larger, with terminal leaflets oblong or lanceolate, obtuse or obtuse-rounded at the apex, cuneate or rounded and oblique at the base, sparsely serrated at the edge, green above, purple below, 1-3 pairs of lateral leaflets, often smaller, the upper leaves are simple, or split into 3 lobes, or a pair of small lobes split at the base of the leaves; petiole 1-7cm long, the lower ones are longer and glabrous. The cyme has 2-6 flowers, forming a terminal raceme, or branching at the base to form a racemose panicle; bracts are lanceolate and purple; pedicels and inflorescence axis are slightly pubescent; calyx is tubular, glabrous on the outside, and pubescent on the upper part of the inner surface, and is two-lipped; corolla is blue-purple or purple, pubescent on the outside, with a sparse hair ring in the middle of the inner tube, and the crown rim is two-lipped, with the lower lip nearly equal to the upper one and 3-lobed; there are two stamens, the locules are degenerate, enlarged into a foot shape, and the apex is united with each other; the staminodes are short; the style has two unequal lobes at the apex, and the posterior lobe is shorter. Nutlets black, hairless. Flowering period is from July to September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: 1. Growing on rocky hillsides, under forests, and beside ditches at an altitude of 530-1300m.

[Properties] The stem is square with fine soft hairs, simple leaves opposite or odd-pinnate compound leaves, the leaf blade is long ovate, gradually pointed or obtuse at the tip, slightly cordate at the base, with crenate edges, dark purple above and purple-red below, with obvious veins and pubescent hairs on the veins below, and in whorled inflorescence. It has a faint smell and a slightly bitter taste.

【Chemical composition】 Guizhou sage root contains salvianolic acid A, B, C, H and I, isosalvianolic acid C, lithospermic acid and rosmarinic acid.
