[Original form] Cat's milk is a deciduous shrub or small tree, 2-9m high. Young branches green, pubescent or densely pubescent. Leaves are alternate; petioles are 2-6mm long, densely pubescent; stipules are lanceolate, 3-4mm long, free from the stem at the base, persistent; leaf blades are obovate-oblong, obovate-elliptic or oblong, 4-12cm long, 2-5cm wide, apex caudate-acuminate, base rounded, slightly oblique, margins serrulate, green above, glabrous, yellow-green below, pubescent or pubescent only along the veins. Cymes are axillary, flowers are bisexual, yellow-green, peduncle is 1-4mm long, sparsely pubescent or glabrous; sepals are 5, triangular, margins are sparsely short hairy; petals are 5, broadly obovate, apex slightly concave; stamens are 5; ovary is superior, 1-chambered or incompletely 2-chambered, style apex is 2 shallowly lobed. The drupe is cylindrical, 7-9mm long and 3-5mm in diameter. It is red or orange-red when ripe and turns black or purple-black when dry. The flowering period is from May to July, and the fruiting period is from July to October.
