[Source] Medicinal material source: the root and bark of Gardenia jasminoides, a plant of the family Caryophyllaceae.

[Original form] Gardenia bark is a tree, up to 20m high. The bark is gray-brown and the lenticels are gray-white. The leaves are large, elliptical to broadly elliptical, 15-30cm long, 8-15cm wide, or sometimes up to 40cm long and 18cm wide; the apex is acute or acuminate, the base is nearly rounded, the underside is nearly glabrous or has gray-yellow soft hairs, and the leaf margins are finely serrated. Dioecious; male flowers are in terminal panicles, up to 8 cm long, with 3-4 deeply lobed calyxes, covered with felt-like hairs on the outside, and petals missing; stamens are numerous; female flowers are larger and solitary at the terminal. The capsule is elliptical or narrowly ovate, 8-10cm long. The exocarp is leathery and covered with felt-like hairs. It splits into 4-6 lobes from the tip downwards, and each lobe splits into 2 lobes from the base of the placenta upwards to the middle and falls off. Seeds numerous, surrounded by wings.

[Habitat distribution] Distributed in Southwest China and Guangxi.

[Cultivation] Biological characteristics: It likes warm and humid climate and light. It was introduced and cultivated in areas with a low altitude of 80m, where it grew well and bloomed and bore fruit normally. It grows rapidly in hot and rainy seasons, and stops growing when the temperature drops below 10℃ in winter. The soil should be deep, fertile, well-drained sandy loam.
